The Absent Woman’s Photograph
In the 1912 portrait, someone has disappeared beneath the scissors. In Camille Vallet’s family, the frame has always been there. They knew the faces, the places, the story passed down with the picture. But a cut turns the portrait into a question. Then an intact photographic plate reveals a fifth woman: the one the family had stopped seeing.

Claire Bonnarel had revised the Historical Society’s entry the day before. The new version mentioned a negative plate showing five people in front of Les Ormes and the probable identification of the fifth as Adèle Roussel. It also noted that the print exhibited in 1982 had been selected from available images and should not be taken as evidence of the family’s original composition. No mention of the scar. No private letter. No accusation against Blanche. No theory about the scissors.Read the excerpt ↗
