Five Weeks Too Many
Her calendar knows the next five weeks. Iris does not recognize her life in them. Appointments appear before she has made them. Some seem harmless. Others concern people she should not yet be expecting. On one page, a simple “N…,” followed by a time, becomes the point around which everything takes shape.

The initial followed by three dots was an old habit. She used it for appointments whose names she did not want left in plain sight on a desk: sellers in conflict with their families, hesitant beneficiaries, employees reporting a problem before agreeing to be quoted.
