Naledi Maseko removed her headphones, waited for the air conditioner’s background rumble to stop, and replayed the eight-second commercial for the fourth time. On-screen, a woman in a bathrobe bit into brown bread, looked up at a man out of frame, and said, “I thought you’d left.” In the first take, her voice held an amused breath.
