The Years We Never Had

At 5:12 on Friday afternoon, Camille received the final version of her divorce agreement at the exact moment the engineering firm informed her that Moncey School’s access ramp extended three centimeters onto the neighboring property.

She looked at the plan first.

The screen divided her attention into two almost equal rectangles: on the left, the covered playground section and the red line the engineer had added at the last moment; on the right, Maître Lenoir’s notification, its subject on a single line: **Agreement ready for signature — Monday, November 16, 2 p.m.**

“Three centimeters,” Nora repeated behind her. “At that point it’s geometric persecution.”

Camille enlarged the section.

“Three centimeters means a neighbor who refuses to sign off.”

“And two millimeters?”

“Two millimeters means a discussion.”

“I love how you do philosophy with guardrails.”

Nora set an unrequested coffee on the corner of the desk. Since September she had stopped asking whether Camille wanted anything before going to the machine. She returned with two coffees, one decaf for Camille, and pretended to forget that the change dated from the day Camille started sleeping in four-hour stretches.

Around the open-plan office, the other screens went dark one by one. Fine rain clung to the agency’s windows. Below, rue de la Villette shone in headlights and passing buses. Camille took the cup, drank too soon, burned her tongue, and said nothing.

“Are you going to open it?” Nora asked.

Camille did not ask what she meant.
