The Weave

The following Monday, someone had laid Maud Arcas’s face across the forty gray boxes.

Lise saw it before she even took off her coat.

It was not a photograph taken from the archives. Édith had had the last copies the Center could still access deleted, and no one had reopened the question. The image came from outside: the weekend press review, printed by communications, with a two-page article on the publication of the methodological deposit. Maud appeared in an old professional portrait already reproduced dozens of times since C-24. The sheet had slipped out of the monitoring folder and fallen across the boxes returned from the archives for a retention check.

Chance had given the table precisely the composition they had worked to undo.

Forty files. One face in the middle.

Mina, crouched in front of the equipment rack, had not turned around yet.

“If you’re looking at the table like that, I should point out it wasn’t me.”

Lise took the sheet by one corner, without folding it, and returned it to the blue folder marked **PRESS — NONSCIENTIFIC**.

“Why is C-24 back up here?”

“Permissions check after the freeze expired. Nothing new. Awa wants to verify that the stable artifact destroyed Friday hasn’t left any active dependencies in the old views.”

“And the log?”

“Complete.”

“Then the boxes didn’t need to come back up.”

Mina straightened, a network cable coiled around her wrist.

“The boxes, no. The forms, yes. Awa wanted us to check the numbers together because three restrictions changed form during the freeze. And before you start, they go back at eleven.”

Lise finally removed her coat. The laboratory heating had just come on; warm air with a faint metallic smell rose beneath the table, making the top sheet of the press review tremble. She put her bag on a chair rather than beside the boxes.

“What’s broken?”

“You’re making a lot of assumptions about my morning.”

Something
remained.

You followed a presence, crossed a place, looked at an object. The stories kept their place. Your visit left another trace.
