The Triangular Courtyard

There was nothing mysterious about the triangle.

It came from a boiler room that could not be moved, a 1930s pavilion listed as municipal heritage, and a fire access lane that required six clear meters all the way beneath the old block’s windows. At 8:12 that Monday, September 28, Élise Vannier summed it up that way for three cold people standing around a folding table, where the wind kept lifting the corners of the plan.

“If anyone has a fourth constraint, say so now.”

Gabriel Sorel tucked a roll of tracing paper beneath his elbow. The site manager, in a white hard hat, looked at the sky as though a fourth constraint might fall from it. Safia Benali, nurse manager of the future outpatient unit, had left her white coat in the changing room and wore a dark green sweater beneath her vest. She was not looking at the triangle. She was looking at the width of the corridor beside it.

“A stretcher won’t get through here if two families are waiting outside the rooms.”

“Families won’t wait there.”

Safia looked up.

“Families wait everywhere they’re told not to.”

Gabriel smiled without a sound. Élise heard it anyway.

On the Sainte-Adèle hospital construction site, the courtyard existed only as a void surrounded by red lines. To their right, behind hoarding, an excavator tore up slabs of asphalt from the old delivery area. Whenever the bucket fell, a short vibration traveled through Élise’s soles. Before them, pavilion B showed its gray render and overly high windows. In six months, if the schedule held, the new outpatient surgery building would close the space between that pavilion and the technical block. The resulting central angle would be irregular, almost triangular, and no one should ever have needed to discuss it in anything other than square meters.

Élise placed her forefinger on the plan’s north side.
